Oppen Application for BIP-Training the Translator of the Future: Augmented Translation (the collaboration of human, MT, and AI)
We are pleased to announce that the application procedure is now open for the Blended Intensive Program(BIP): Training the Translator of the Future: Augmented Translation (the collaboration of human, MT, and AI)
The BIP will take place in Varna, Bulgaria, from May 10th to 14th, 2027.
The current Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) is designed for BA, MA, and PhD students in Philology, Translation, and Applied Linguistics, as well as other majors interested in a career in translation. The focus of the programme is on augmented translation: the combination of human translation, machine translation, translation memories, and generative AI, which shapes the future of the market for translations. It consists of a Preparatory Virtual Component, a 5-day On-site Component with theoretical and interactive sessions, followed by a Virtual Component which culminates in a final individual or team project (translation and analysis or an academic paper).
The programme integrates theoretical insights and practical applications and fosters critical thinking about the role of the human translator in an increasingly automated world, where augmented translation is considered the future. Participants in the BIP will be able to develop and master skills considered crucial in the current situation: intercultural communication competencies and collaboration in an international team and a multicultural environment, ethics and protection of confidentiality of information, research skills and information literacy, and successful implementation of technology and evaluation of the quality of its output and limitations.
The result is bridging the gap between academic training and industry needs, combining technological competence, critical thinking, and intercultural collaboration.
Learning outcomes
- use AI-powered translation platforms, various tools, MT, and generative AI effectively to support different stages of the translation process;
- apply post-editing, revision, and quality-assurance strategies to machine- and AI-generated translations;
- critically evaluate MT and AI output in terms of linguistic accuracy, terminology, style, register, cultural appropriateness, and communicative purpose;
- identify and address cultural and stylistic challenges in AI-assisted translation and justify their translation decisions;
- demonstrate awareness of professional translation workflows and practices in technology-mediated environments;
- collaborate effectively in international and intercultural teams, negotiating meaning and mediating between different linguistic and cultural perspectives;
- identify and critically discuss ethical issues surrounding the use of AI and MT in translation;
- critically reflect on the changing role, competences, responsibilities, and added value of human translators in the age of AI.
